22 May is International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) and for this year the theme is Biodiversity for Development and Poverty Alleviation. IDB is observed annually on this day to commemorate the adoption of the Convention on 22 May 1992 by the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the CBD in Nairobi. Celebration of this day provides opportunities to raise public awareness on the importance and the vital role biodiversity and ecosystem services play to attain the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). More details can be obtained from http://www.biodiversity-day.info/ and a short discussion on this is found in http://hainanproject.org/.
Planthopper outbreaks are due to the deterioration of biodiversity of functional groups and the related ecosystem services. In order to reduce the vulnerability of rice production systems to outbreaks, ecological engineering techniques that will increase genetic, species and habitat biodiversity, spatially and temporally, and decrease the destructive forces by rationalizing insecticide use, will enhance system resilience.
