International Rice Research Institute, Los Baños, Philippines
The Deputy Director General of the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI), Dato Dr Sharif Haron opened the workshop on toxicology and insecticide resistance determination in the Bertam Rice Research Station on 25 January 2011. In his speech he stressed the importance of basic sciences and techniques in rice research. Toxicology for instance has been neglected and happy to note that CAB International has initiated the workshop and have incorporated experts from IRRI, China and Malaysia to revive the basic sciences. The ADB-IRRI Rice Planthopper Project supported the development of techniques and tools in insecticide monitoring for the last 2 years. The methods described in step-by step procedures have been compiled into a book to be published in 2011. The workshop provided the opportunity to “field test” the analytical procedures in the book with a group of target audience to obtain feedback.
Besides receiving lectures on the basics of insect physiology, mechanisms of resistance and toxicological statistics, participants had hands-on laboratory practices in insect collection, preparation of test chemicals, dosing and conducting probit analysis.
